He was predeceased by: his mother Gladys Miller Steelman; his wife Marjorie "Jean" Steelman; his father Robert A. Steelman Sr.; and his brothers, Robert A. Steelman Jr. and Cordell Steelman.

He is survived by: his sons, David Steelman, Jr. (Marilyn), James Steelman (Jacqueline) and Michael Steelman; his grandchildren, Jordan Steelman (Emma), William Steelman (Beth) and Kelli Steelman; his great grandchild Clark; and his brother Gary of Morgan City, LA.
