He was predeceased by: his parents, John Roger Dawson Sr. and Flora Mae Brantley Dawson; his daughter Cassaundra "Cassie" Irwin; and his sisters, Lemoyne Whittington, Louise Freeman, Lorraine Black and Angela Burkett.
He is survived by: his wife Janice Kelly Dawson; his children, Leah Hazlip and Shane Dawson; and his siblings, Marion Freeman, Gwen Collier, Kevin Dawson, Sherry Cook and Kathy Thomas. He is also survived by five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
