He was predeceased by: his parents, James Hayes and Loretta Hayes (Micinski); his daughter Sue Ann Hayes; and his brother Larry Hayes. He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Sue Hayes (Thornberry); his sons, Gary Hayes (Kelli), Joe Hayes (Tammy) and Tim Hayes (Heather); his grandchildren, Derek Hayes, Kayla Hayes, Andrew Rieger (Jessica), Sara Redecker (Alex), Jessica Lardarello (Ray Guajardo), Emily Pevahouse (Davey), Hannah, Jackie, Stacie, Catie and Nick Hayes; and his brother Bill Hayes. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to be directed to the First Baptist Church of Bismarck.
