He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph P. Sr. Murphy and May Murphy (Kunz); his wife Shirley Branson; his brother Joseph P. Murphy; his brother-in-law Ron Jennings; and his niece Angela Jennings.
He is survived by: his children, Gary Murphy (Dawn Roberts) of Owensville, Marsha Murphy of St. James, John Mayfield (Donna) of Springfield, Judy Kolb (Rick Schaffnit) of Owensville, Jana Vandegriff (Aaron David) of Ashland and Bob Mayfield (Patty) of Owensville; his sister Mamie Jennings of Springfield, Ill.; and his grandchildren, Aaron Vandegriff (Kylie), Kyle Kolb (Amanda), Jake Hinson, Michael Berry (Caryn), Tonya Jones and Trina Hoag. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild.
