He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, George William Gares and Julia Haddassa Gares (Nixon); his sister Lola I; his aunt Jessie Nixon; his wife Lola J. Murphy; his children, Julie Kattelmann (Buddy) of Kahoka, Judith Roddy (Ben) of Sioux Center, IA, Rodney Gares (Mary) of Kahoka and Roger Gares of Colorado Springs, CO; his grandchildren, Jared Gares (Brittany), Jessica Klay (Chad), Kyle Gares, Jenilee Roddy and Julie Thrower (Joe); his brother Harold Gares of Kahoka; and his sister-in-law Laneta Gares of Monroe City. He was also cherished by nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Memorials in lieu of flowers were suggested to the Clark Co. Nursing Home Activity Fund.
