He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest R. Thurmond and Pearl Powers Thurmond; his wife Effie Moore of East Prairie; his son Joseph "Joe" Thurmond; his brothers, Billy Thurmond and J. E. Thurmond; and his daughter-in-law Linda Thurmond.
He is survived by: his sons, Richard Thurmond and Lonnie Thurmond of East Prairie; his daughter-in-law Jacqueline Thurmond; his sister-in-law June Thurmond; his grandchildren, Richard Nathaniel (Hunter Thurmond), Meredyth (Matthew Malone), Joseph Thurmond, Adrienne Thurmond-Adams, Lauren (John Arington) and Lucas Thurmond (Ethan Thurmond); and his great grandchildren, Walker, Hunt, Leigh Tillman-Thurmond, Kipton Malone, Brody, Stella Thurmond, Lyla-Rose Adams, Camrynn and Cadence Arington.
