He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Smith and Helen Myers Smith; and his siblings, Richard Smith, Charles B. Smith, Curtis Dewayne Smith and Sandra Bard.
He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Cohen Smith; his children, James Smith Jr. (Holly) of East Prairie, Tammy Yarbro (Ron) of East Prairie, Rendella and Shelly Barnes of Ozark, Missouri; his sisters, Darlene Scott of Anniston, Missouri and Linda Skelton of Anniston, Missouri; and his niece Lori Hedges. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
