He was predeceased by: his parents, Mildred Burns (Sheen) and Alpha Burns; his former wife Norma Jean; and his son Mitchel Burns. He is survived by: his grandson Ryan; his son-in-law Earl Washam; his wife Sandra Simpson (Hoskins); his children, Robert Burns (Debbie) of Portland, Oregon, Linda Burns (David Warden) of Philipsburg and Anita Burns (Earl Washam) of Kearney, Missouri; his daughter-in-law Anne Burns of Marceline, Missouri; his stepchildren, Linda Johnson (Scott) of Kirksville, John Simpson (Cheri) of Kingsville, Janet Marriott (Shayne) of Clinton and Carol Robison (John) of Laclede, Missouri; his grandchildren, Lauren Burns Buckholtz (Steele), Courtney Burns Weber (Josh), Whitney Teeter (Taylor), Abby Ojolola (Ayo), Sierra Burns Lamadore (Scott), D. J. Burns Warden (Erin) and Daniel Burns Warden; his stepchildren, Ashlie Reyes (Jeremy), Alison File (Blaine), Cheyenne Scott, Derek Marriott, Monica Shaw (Logan), Kristen (Kamel), Natasha Maudlin (Wyatt) and Luke Robison (Jillian); his brother Ellis Burns of Brookfield; and also Josh Maxwell. He is also survived by sixteen great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Brookfield, MO, with a Prayer Service at 6:00 p. m. Per the family's wishes, masks are mandatory for the services and visitation.
