He was predeceased by: his wife Ruth; his daughter Julie Hawkinson; and his parents, Leonard Hawkinson and Leona Hawkinson. He is survived by: his children, Heidi Koehnen (Craig) and Kristian Hawkinson (Joan); his grandchildren, Liesl Koehnen (William Dokken), St Paul, Harrison Koehnen (Ashley), Brita Koehnen Moorhead (Vernon Newman) and Joshua Hopfer of Boynton Beach, FL; his great grandchildren, Ruthann, Gweneth Koehnen and Adam McMullen of Fort Benning, GA; his siblings, Robert Hawkinson (Janet), Drucilla Ticiu (Mihail) and Inver Grove Heights; and his brother-in-law David Lindstrom (Mary) of Green Bay, WI..

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Boutwells Landing Chaplin program, Lakeview Hospice or Trinity Lutheran Church.
