He was predeceased by: his parent Mildred Alms; his grandparents, Christian and Maria Alms; his siblings, Robert Scharpen and Donna Scharpen Jonas; his son-in-law Michael Johnson; and his granddaughter Alyssa Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife Donna Alms; his son Walt Alms (Sharon) of Austin, MN; his stepchildren, Kathy Johnson of Red Wing, Dan Johnson (Jill) of Red Wing, Diane Demers (Clarence) of Red Wing and Keith Johnson (Renee) of Hager City; his grandchildren, Brittany Symonds (Michael) of Prior Lake, Nick Alms (Kelly) of Plymouth, Sara Hall (Alex) of Canon City, CO, Chris "Vern" Johnson (Bri) of St. Paul, Nate Johnson of Red Wing, Jeni Grimm (Kevin) of Eagan, Lucas Johnson (Samantha) of River Falls, Shane Eckhoff (Crystal) of Goodhue, Cole Eckhoff (Mandy) and Tanner Eckhoff (Camile) of Red Wing; his great grandchildren, Addison, Mitchell Symonds, Oliver, Emma Alms, Kinsley Hall, Avi, Kroix Johnson, Lily, Jack, Brooks Grimm, Lucy Johnson, Braeden, Carsen Eckhoff, Piper Eckhoff and Wesley Eckhoff; and his brother Richard Scharpen (Elaine) of Red Wing. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorials are preferred to Brighton Hospice, American Cancer Society or donor's choice.
