He was loved and cherished by many people including: his brothers, Honda and Marine; his wife Kathleen; his children, Tom Oakes (Dayna) of Ortonville, MN, Daniel Oakes (Vicki) of Ortonville, MN, John Oakes (Julie Sammon) of Odessa, MN, Steven Oakes (Bobbie) of Ortonville, MN and David Oakes (Denise) of Detroit Lakes, MN; his grandchildren, Jesse, Jason, Isaac, Trenton, Dani, Brooke, Justin, Aaron and Sean; his great grandchildren, Austen, Kyler, Wilson, Jaxon, Clara Kay and Arya; his sisters-in-law, Constance Oakes of Stillwater, MN and Patricia Paine (Dennis) of Mora, MN.; his brothers, Thomas, Charles and James; his daughter-in-law Karen Oakes; his siblings-in-law, Clarine Oakes, Doris Oakes and John Ryan; and his nephew Michael Oakes.
