He was predeceased by: his parents, Sherman Ely and Lela Ely (Smith); and his siblings, Mildred, Lola, Marion, Willis and Bud.
He is survived by: his former wife Alice Zimmerman (Iverna); his wife Alice Ely of Cleveland; his children, Darrell Ely (Rebecca) of Eagle Lake, Diane Lambrecht (Sonnie) of New Prague, Dayton Ely of Cleveland, DeNell Cesafsky (John) of Le Center and Darren Ely (Corrinne) of Cleveland; his sister Marvis O'Malley (Roger) of Hutchinson; and his siblings-in-law, Ardis Ely, Elsie Ely of Cleveland and Kenneth Grice of St. Paul. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Cleveland American Legion or Cleveland Fire Department.
