He was predeceased by: his father William Howard Byrd Sr.; and his nephew Michael Bernard Layher. He is survived by: his mother Frances Byrd-Gaines (Robert); his sisters, Robin Thomas, Trennis Sweatt (Alonzo), Sharon Hall (Clark) and Karen Layher (Michael); and his stepsiblings, Robert Gaines Jr., Kesha Gaines and LaToya Joplin. He is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews, 38 great-nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.
