He was predeceased by: his parents, John Lee and Shirley Garrett (Branham); his wife Judy Whitten; his sisters, Virginia Watts and Jane Harris; and his siblings-in-law, Larry Harris, Denny Whitten, Phillip Whitten, Robert Whitten and Janet Whitten.
He is survived by: his children, Carolyn Thornsberry (Rex) of Ypsilanti, Debbie Vasas (Ed) of Ypsilanti and Vernon Jr. (Angie) of Ypsilanti; his stepgrandchildren, Adraya Van Dyk (Evan), Adriana Batton (Spencer), Shelby Thornsberry, Aidan Garrett, Shaun (Barb Vasas), Billy Vasas (Ashley), Bobby Vasas and Zach Brockette (Ashley); his great grandchildren, Preston, Jerry, Noah, Katlynn, Sophie, Keegan, Thomas, Alara, Cole, Harper and Evie; and his siblings-in-law, Roger Watts (Shirley), Mary and Linda Whitten. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
