He was predeceased by: his father Barnie Stokes; his brother Robert Stokes (Patricia); and his parents-in-law, Herbert and Lillie Strong. He is survived by: his wife Delta Stokes; his son James Stokes Jr. (Kimberly); his grandson Connor; his sister Cathy Gray (David); his siblings-in-law, Herbert Strong (Felicia) and Betty Strong; and also Margaret Stokes.
