He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Barnhart and Ruth Barnhart (Trimm); his son Robert Barnhart Jr.; his wives, Carol, Helen and Marjorie; and his brothers, Mike Barnhart, Larry Barnhart and William "Bill" Barnhart.

He is survived by: his daughter Karen Barnhart of Big Rapids; his close friend Mark Holbrook of White Cloud; and his brother Charles Barnhart of Ypsilanti. He is also survived by 2 nephews and 1 niece.
