He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Upston and Viola Upston (Wendorf); his siblings, Betty Cummins and Clarence Upston; his brothers-in-law, William Cummins and Jerry Rann; his niece Sherry Cummins; and his nephews, Bill Cummins and Calvin Cummins.

He is survived by: his wife Madilyn Thomas; his children, Howard Walter Upston (Debbie) of Tekonsha and Deidre Cross (Daniel) of Sherwood; his grandchildren, Shaun Upston of Burlington, Logan Cross of Marshall, Deborah Thompson (Carl) of Tekonsha, Brittni Hughes of Three Rivers, Ashley Cross of Madison, FL and Danielle Cross of Tekonsha; his great grandchildren, Ivan Hughes and Payton Thompson; his stepgranddaughters, Heather Jefferies of Burlington and Katelyn Emmel of Tekonsha; his great grandchildren, Hannah Macomber, Aiden Dodson, Landen Brown, Gabriel Smith and Gavin Smith; his siblings, Tom Upston (Gail) of North Carolina, Rolene Rann of Texas and Debra Pierce (Donald) of Tekonsha; and his brother-in-law Larry Thomas (Carolyn). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
