He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Schafer and Mary Schafer. He is survived by: his wife Joann Schafer; his sons, Brian J. Schafer (Kathy), James A. Schafer (Vanessa) and Timothy W. Schafer (Darcey); his grandchildren, Jon, Tyler and Alexandra; and his siblings, Mary Dittrich, Bob Schafer, Tom Schafer and Rita Oldfield. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
