He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald A. Gilbert and Anne H. Gilbert (Frucci); his brother Terry Gilbert; and his sister-in-law Carolyn Gilbert. He is survived by: his wife Jeanie; his children, Daniel Gilbert (Heather) of Little Canada, Mary Kirby of South Bend, Nathan Gilbert (Katie) of Edwardsburg and David Gilbert (Meagan) of Mishawaka, Indiana; his grandchildren, Joshua, Lileyna, Lincoln, Quinn and Thea; and his sister Mary Neitzke (Robert) of Carmel. He is also survived by several nieces and nephew.
