He was predeceased by: his parents, Edgar Merckel and Jean Merckel (Augustyne); his aunts, Irene Hart and Henrietta Augustyne; and his uncle William "Bill" Merckel (Marion).
He is survived by: his wife Lenore O'Leary; his children, Daniel Merckel, Denise Nitta (Robert) and Charlene Merckel; his grandchildren, Manon Nitta and Jocelyn Nitta; and his sister Kathleen Hvizdos (Michael). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
