He is survived by: his former wife Marilyn Hendrex; his son Frederick (Eric); his wife Sharlyn DeHaven Gates; his children, Karen Woodard (Richard) and Eric Gates (Anne); his stepchildren, David Drews (Tisha), Darrick Drews (Shawna) and Annie Batten (Eric); his sisters, Harriet Mason and Areta Heard (Charles); his sister-in-law Judy Gates; his grandchildren, Sam Woodard (Rosa), William Woodard, Michael Woodard, Marti Smith (Joshua), Emily Rivera (Johnny), Tyler Gates, Dylan Drews, Natalie Drews, Aiden Drews, Andrew Batten and Izabel Batten; his great grandchildren, Elijah Smith, Heidi Smith, Gideon Smith and Evie Smith; and his nieces, Kathy Hijazi, Janece Gates Hiegel and Julia Bonar.
