He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, David and Elsie Nikolai (Elbers); his wife Janet C. Luth; his sons, Brian (Carolyn), Steven (Lisa) and Gregory (Dawn); his grandchildren, Nicole Ortiz (Anthony), Derek Nikolai (Justine), Ryan Nikolai (Rachel), Erica LaBonville (Kaleb), Andrea Nikolai, Sydni Nikolai and Tim Butler; his sisters, Deloros Geitman of Freeland and Judi Melody of Carrollton; his sister-in-law Mary Nikolai; and his siblings, Dorothy Ann Goodwin and James Nikolai. He was also cherished by seven great grandchildren.
