He was predeceased by: his parents, Willard Courney and Goldie Lloyd; his wife Alice Ellen Courney; his children, Theresa Courney Powell Bronson and Scott Courney; his siblings, Carol Coe, Joyce Hoose, Karen Hammett and Willard "Bill" Courney; and his brothers-in-law, Norman Hammett and Patrick Hoose.
He is survived by: his children, Robert G. Courney and Lisa Shofner (Courney); and his stepchildren, Joseph Wendt (Wanda) of Gladwin and Salle Gean (Jerry) of Swartz Creek. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St Jude's Children's Hospital.
