He was predeceased by: his son Benjamin. He is survived by: his wife Judy; his children, Jake, Deanna Schaafsma, Corinn, Nick Truer and Alex Schaafsma; his grandchildren, Eliza, Liam, Zeke Truer and Isaac Schaafsma; and his siblings, Rick, Sharon Schaafsma, Maud, Frank Jefferis, Phil and Amy Schaafsma. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions in Joel's memory may be made to the Cascade Fellowship CRC Benevolence Fund.
