She was predeceased by: her parents, Payton Wheatley and Ethel Bestpitch Wheatley; her husband George Melvin Newell, Sr.; her daughter Bonnie Hilghman; and her siblings, Mary Virginia Fishell, Bernice Trice, Catherine Smith and Henry D. Wheatley.
She is survived by: her son Melvin Newell, Jr. (Ellen); her grandchildren, Angela Newell Walsh (Christian), Carter Jarrell and Joseph Newell; her great grandchildren, Reid, Ben and Grant Walsh; her son-in-law Duane Hilghman; her nephew Kenneth Fishell (Barbara) of American Corner; and also Mary Lou Lewis.
