Reed Harrison wrote a sympathy message

“My sincere condolences to Jon's Mom, family, and friends. Jon was a good man. He was THE recognized expert in his field; the guy you called when you had a tough problem to solve or decision to make. His life's work truly made the world a safer place for my family, friends, and fellow Americans. His was a good and impactful life. Jon made the world a better place.”

Mammoth George wrote a sympathy message

“Jon was an extremely unique individual. He hid his gigantic heart under a sometimes gruff exterior, but his smile gave away the real Jon. While the N Scale Enthusiast will miss his hard work and dedication, I will miss my friend and fellow rail nut. His attention to detail in his volunteer work was just a side note to his lust for life. I am certain he is up there figuring out a better way to do things. Jon, you are sorely missed. See you down the tracks, friend.”

Phil Bove wrote a sympathy message

“Jon didn't want you to know he cared about you; he was funny like that. He'd mask it in his unique brand of humor, or veiled sarcasm. But you knew! He worried about us, and he wanted us to be happy. He just preferred that we didn't notice. I miss him. Rest peacefully, Jon. The stairway to heaven might need some repairing, so as soon as you're settled, you should think about getting to work! 😉❤️”

“That is the best description of Jon I have heard yet. He was very protective. In the aftermath of a major calamity, the one thing he wanted me to hear was "Protect your people".”

“Jon contemplating his retirement; “this getting old BS is a pain, then again, the throttle on my career gets another notch. I can move in with you guys, Linda and I can sleep until noon and then drink while you work”. Me; “yeah that's all I need is two of you! Be sure to bring your own bottle”.”

Marion Bedingfield wrote a sympathy message

“Heartfelt condolences, Jon was one of a kind. His special skills enabled him to globetrot and train spot, he made it a point to include Linda and me as part of his worldly tours wherever our journeys crossed. He put the ‘I’ in ‘Sane’ with his humor. As he said “my mission to spread joy and harmony adds another happy page”. Thanks for the laughs and keep that train rolling my little misguided Bo-Sox fan. We’ll miss you.”

Jaymie Brain wrote a sympathy message

“My deepest condolences to Jon's friends and family. Jon and I were coworkers and friends. When he would make cross-country train trips, I would meet up with him at Union Station for a beer and we'd chat about about his house projects, "work" projects, love of anything train related, and of course his mom. He adored his mom and would absolutely do anything for her. So long my friend, you will be missed.”

David Hartzel wrote a sympathy message

“My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jon upon his untimely passing. May you find peace and comfort at this most difficult time. I worked with Jon from time to time during our careers and first met him 25 years ago. We remained friends following his retirement. I will admit it took me a little bit of time to understand and appreciate his sense of humor and the sarcasm that came with it. It was what made Jon unique and liked. We will all miss Jon in our own personal way.”

Kevin O'Connor wrote a sympathy message

“My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Jon's family and to everyone who cared about him. I had the pleasure of working with Jon near the end of his career; He had a unique way of looking at the world, which helped move the mission forward. His work in Hawaii is still relied upon, 10 years after retirement. But Jon was more than just work. When he would visit me in Japan, we'd go to baseball games -- including the MLB's Tokyo opener in 2012, where he took a picture of us on the scorebrd”

His love for trains led to many fun and interesting conversations. He contributions to the nation may never be known outside of the DoD, but they were many. He will be missed. Steve...”
