He was predeceased by: his wife Maureen Yates (Fitzpatrick); his parents, John Yates and Rosemary Yates (Logue); and his siblings, Nancy Carroll and Claire McLaughlin.

He is survived by: his sons, James M. Yates (Julie Canfield) of Roslindale, MA, William A. Yates (Betty Nguyen) of Westford, MA and Paul A. Yates (Erin Yates) of Plainfield, NH; his grandchildren, Aidan Yates, Sebastian Yates, Paul Yates and Rachel Yates; and his brother John Yates (Barbara Yates) of Boxford, MA. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
