She was predeceased by: her parents, John Riley and Katherine Riley (McKenna); her spouse Thomas Jefferson Underwood Jr.; her siblings, Dorothy, John (Ruth), Muriel, Shirley (Joseph Sorota), William (Peggy), Gerald (Teresa) and Mary; and her brother-in-law William Underwood (Jacqueline).
She is survived by: her children, Claire Wood of Lawrence, MA, Thomas Underwood (Vanessa) of Plaistow, NH, Kathy Cuddy (John) of Dracut, MA and Kevin Underwood (Jill) of Salisbury, MA; and her grandchildren, Melissa McKinnon, Lynn Wood, Caroline Reynolds, Sarah Millar, Katherine Sottung, Meredith Underwood and Nathan Underwood. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
During the COVID pandemic Joan was a resident of Prescott House in North Andover and developed close relationships with several of her caregivers.
