Alison D. Black Obituary
Alison D. Black, age 61, of Beverly, MA, formerly of Gloucester, MA passed peacefully on December 2, 2023. She was the daughter of the late John and Star Black and is survived by her loving sister, Christine Black and brother, Peter Black, his wife Mary and children George and Sophia. Alison had the love of her California family, the children and widow of her late brother, Brian Black.
Special to Alison was the love she received from her devoted partner, Barry Gilks. He was her constant companion and caretaker for 23 years. They made a fantastic pair, each bringing to the relationship different qualities that made it so unique. Also vital to Alison's life was the unwavering friendship she received from her longtime friend, April Richards, who became her PCA nine years ago. Barry and April were both essential in guiding Alison through her most challenging times and keeping her cherished independence.
After Alison's accident, with the support of her family, she went back to school earning two degrees, one in fashion merchandizing and one in social work. Alison and April started a group for single adults with disabilities which held four big events; Alison also edited a newsletter for the group. While living in Gloucester, Alison was a member of the Riverdale Methodist Church where she made many friends. Alison found great pleasure in maintaining gardens at her Lanesville home for many years. Alison and Barry were strong supporters of the Cape Ann Animal Aid where Alison adopted her two beloved cats. Alison was admired by many people for her strength, happy nature, and resilience. She will be greatly missed.
There will be a visiting hour Friday, December 8, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM followed by a service at 2: PM at the Greely Funeral home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA; all are welcome.
