He was predeceased by: his parents, Estill Lee and Imogene Trusty Bates; his daughter Crystal Bates; his brother Roy Bates; and his half-brother James Lee Bates.
He is survived by: his close friend Janie Smith of Carlisle, Kentucky; his children, Johnny Ray Bates of Dallas, Jordan Bates of California, Lisa Marie Bates of Pine Ridge, Linda Campoamor (Doug) of Brooksville, Jennifer Bates of Georgetown and Rena Elswick (Richard) of Ashland, Kentucky; and his sisters, Anna Watkins (Price) of Ezel, Stella Bates of West Liberty and Betty Fallen (Larry) of Hazel Green, Kentucky.. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
