He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin McDowell and Margaret McCowan McDowell; his daughter Angela McDowell; and his siblings, Lowell Gene McDowell, J. C. McDowell, Doris Sparks and Annette Moore.
He is survived by: his wife Carole Moore McDowell of Ashland; his son James Christopher "Chris" McDowell (Katie) of Ashland; his brothers, Loval McDowell (Sandy) of Ashland and Mike McDowell (Susan) of Maysville, KY; and his grandchildren, Kade Dye, Caden McDowell and Cameron McDowell. He is also survived by extended family and friends.
