With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Carol Ann Near of Lyons, Kansas, born in Baldwin City, Kansas, who passed away on February 16, 2024 at the age of 77. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Carol Ann Near to pay them a last tribute.

She was predeceased by: her parents, James Moherman and Mabel Moherman (Counselman); and her spouse Vester Near. She is survived by: her sons, Darrin Good (Vickie) of Gardner, KS and Mark Good (Irene) of Denver, CO. She is also survived by one stepchild; numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the St. Joseph Indian School or Friends of Animals Rice County in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

“I got to know Carol as Principal (2000-2004) and Superintendent (2004-2010) at Ellinwood USD 355. She was a very caring school counselor. She loved every student and would do anything to help them succeed, She was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed. She was part of the crisis team at Ellinwood Schools and ESSDACK in Hutchinson, KS. She was also a great friend and helped support me as an administrator. A very special lady indeed. Richard Goodschmidt”
