He was predeceased by: his parents, Otis Kooser and Evelyn Loper Kooser; his stepbrother Otis Ken Kooser Jr.; and his grandson Braxton Kooser. He is survived by: his wife Melanie Kooser; his sons, Rob Kooser (Alana) of Derby and Ken Kooser (Shonda) of Derby, Kansas; his siblings, Sandra Hewitt of Circleville, Jane DeForest (Harry) of Gardner, Betty Letterman of Horton, Kansas and Herb Kooser (Sandy) of Hiawatha, Kansas; and his sister-in-law Vicki Kooser of Conroe. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
