He was predeceased by: his parents, Warren Whaley and Bessie Whaley; his siblings, Robert, Donald Whaley and Twila Whaley; and his nieces and nephews, Robert Whaley, Robert Dorgan, Linda Alexander, Debbie Orthwein and Jennifer Kitts.

He is survived by: his wife Elinor Fine; his daughters, Kristi Houston (Jimmy) and Nisha Whaley; his grandchildren, Madison Whaley and Roger Bennin III; and his stepgranddaughters, Jessica Hazen (Jordan) and Jennifer Carrico (Nick). He is also survived by eight step-great-grandchildren, as well as sixteen nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
