He was predeceased by: his parents, John Carter and Wynonia Carter (Johnnie); and his father-in-law Dee Havill. He is survived by: his spouse Luzell Carter; his children, Eric Carter (Terri) and Jalyn Sanford (Mike); his grandchildren, Ashlyn and Tyler Sanford; his sisters, Brenda Barrett (Max), Cathy Nugent (Dave) and Sally Readle (Larry); his brother-in-law Terry Havill (Cindy); and his mother-in-law Mary Havill. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be given to Somebody's Place, Bethany Christian Church of Washington, Indiana, First Christian Church of Petersburg, Indiana, or P.A.W.S.
