He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert L. Schmaltz and Margarette Schmaltz (Britton); and his brother Daniel A. Schmaltz. He is survived by: his wife Cheryl Schmaltz (Liston) of Dillsboro; his children, Michael Schmaltz (Roger) of Anaheim, California, Melissa Sites (Stacy) of Lawrenceburg and Dianna Bowling (Mark) of Loves Park, Illinois; his brother William "Bud" Schmaltz of Dillsboro; his grandchildren, Thierrin, Brittany, Tyler, Christopher, Makenzie and Max; and his great grandchildren, Tessa, Olivia, Harper, Kileigh and Cadin.

Memorials may be given in honor of Richie to American Cancer Society.
