He was predeceased by: his father Lawrence Updike; his wives, Sue Limburg and Ellen Gibbs Updike; his sisters, Barbara K. Sanders and Cloann Mositner; his stepfather Robert Wright; and his niece April Riggle.

He is survived by: his children, Vonda Anthony (Bruce), Venetta Powers (Terry), Kyle Updike (Pam) and Yvette Kidd (Dale). He is also survived by ten grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
