He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Earl and Beulah Evelyn Downes (Wilson); his wife Joyce Marie Owens; his granddaughter Krista; and his brothers-in-law, Henry Crim and Marvin Owens.

He is survived by: his children, Deborah Marlow (Greg) of Dix, Donna Whisenhunt (Kenny) of Woodlawn, Darla Kelley (Kevin) of Mount Vernon, Dinah Bielong (Mike) of Highland, Dixie Devros (Scott) of Livermore, Daisy Jan Mellott (James) of Mount Vernon, Dawn Burkett Chapman (Steve) of Mount Vernon, Carmen "Angie" Burkett Reece of Mount Vernon, Jason Burkett (Stacey) of Mount Vernon, John Burkett (Heather) of Dix and Jeff Burkett (Brandy) of Woodlawn, Illinois; his grandchildren, Julie (Jake), Elizabeth (Nick), Jennifer (Mike), Jessica, Mariah, Ryan (Brittany), Lydia, Jarod Downes, Jacob, Sydney, Cameron, Christina (Anthony), Chelsea (Nick), Cassie (Dylan), Alexandrea (Zach), Samuel, Tyler (Morgan), J. J., Jaid, Jase, Madison, Carson and Kendra (John); his great grandchildren, Brandon, Paige, Peyton, D. J., Tynsley, Gracelynn, Marleigh, Ashlee, Lucas, Mason, Jackson, Race, River and Rain; his great great grandchildren, Febie and Sofie; his sister Betty Crim of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and his pet Sissy. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
