He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Robert E. and Mildred Matter Burns; his stepmother Lucille Burns; his granddaughters, Angela Christine Burns and Dr. Kelly Rene Burns; and his siblings, Dr. Thomas W. Burns and Ruth Ann Cannon.
He is survived by: his wife Martha E. Guy; his children, Dr. J. Richard Burns (Vickie) of Moline and Barbara Kroenig (Mark) of St. Louis, MO; his grandchildren, Matthew Kroenig (Olivia), Bradley Kroenig (Nicole), Julie Forbes (Jonathan) and Keith Burns; and his great grandchildren, Eleanora, Henry, Hudson, Jameson Kroenig, Langston, Scarlet, Rowan and Booker Forbes.
