ARTHUR ALLEN LINDLEY III Obituary

ARTHUR ALLEN LINDLEY III
1/31/38 – 2/20/23
Of Sugar Grove, formerly a 44-year resident of Naperville, IL, passed away, at the age of 85, on Monday, February 20th. Art was born to Arthur Jr. and Bertie Irene Bryson in New York City. He graduated from Brevard HS in Brevard, NC in 1955. In 1960, Art received his BS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University in Clemson, SC. While at Clemson, he was the YMCA vice president, elected Chaplain of the student body & President of the Senior YMCA Council his senior year, and a member of the Council Club Presidents. He nurtured his love of music as a member of a 4-man folk group, The Tradewinds, that performed at college events and throughout the community.
He was a 1st Lieutenant, a commissioned officer, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Ft. Belvoir (VA) & Ft. Benning (GA) from 1960-62. During his work years, Art held various sales positions for Olin Corp, Ormet, Keelor Steel & Aluminum, Consolidated Aluminum, and Northern Engraving, throughout the Midwest.
Art met the love of his life, Barbara A. Metcalf, on a blind date. They married just 3 months later in August of 1964, in St. Louis, MO. Their only child, Joel C. (Chris) was born 10 months later. Art was preceded in death by his parents, and, in September 2022, Barb, who he was the epitome of an Earth Angel to throughout their 58 years. Art is survived by Chris and his wife Susan (Gaskill) and his favorite people in the world, his grandchildren, Megan, Kyle & Sarah, as well as his older sister Regina Ray from Hendersonville, NC; along with other in-laws, nieces & nephews.
Art was very involved in the various communities where he lived. They settled in Naperville in 1978. He was a volunteer at the Naper Settlement and a board member of the Naperville Heritage Society, for 12 years. They were dealer chairs of the Naperville Antique Show for 11 years and the show chairman in 1989. He led scouts & coached baseball leagues. He and Barb were big fans of Chris’ baseball teams through college. Art loved to golf and had the thrill of playing at St. Andrews and Turnberry in Scotland, as well as wonderful courses throughout the US. He celebrated a Hole in One at Blackberry Oaks in IL. Art enjoyed reading, loved Calvin & Hobbes, flying kites, zooting on his kazoo, as well as antiquing, collecting Will Moses art and custom teddy bears, with Barb. He also made great friends as a long-time member of the Edward Health & Fitness center.
The family will be holding a Celebration of Life gathering. A graveside service will be held at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. If you would like to attend, contact [email protected] for information.
Art loved flowers, especially amaryllis and hostas. We ask that rather than sending the family flowers, you surprise someone with a bouquet to honor him, and them. He was an amazing, generous and fun-loving Grampy, Dad, Father-in-law, Brother, Uncle and friend to so many. Art was fond of this quote … “To live on in the hearts of loved ones we leave behind is not to die.”
