He is survived by: his friends, Bob and Pop; his children, Mark Schafer (Jo), Mike Schafer of Indianapolis, IN, Bo Schafer (Carol) of Petersburg, IL, Gina Woodrum (Chuck) of Petersburg, IL, Ann Strasma (Kip) of Deerfield, IL and Tim Schafer (Paige) of Beaverton, OR; and his grandchildren, Jessica Burnside (Craig) of Lincoln, NE, Logan Schafer (Kristy) of Paris, France, Caryln Craig (Clayton) of Indianapolis, IN, April Cox (Chris) of Indianapolis, IN, Jolori Thurman (Evan) of Markleville, IN, Nick Schafer (Erin) of Springfield, IL, Lauren Kulavic (Brent) of Springfield, IL, Claire Schafer of Petersburg, IL, Lindsay Wissmiller (Mitch) of Spaulding, IL, Christy Woodrum of Athens, IL, Madalynn Woodrum of Sherman, IL, Taylor and Ashley Schafer of Beaverton, OR. He is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Schafer was inducted into the Petersburg PORTA Foundation Hall of Fame in March 2018 for his community service and volunteerism as a past president of the PORTA School Board, PTA and member of the Foundation Board.
