He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry L. Bates and Erma J. Edwards Bates. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Ann Lanthripp of Pawnee; his son Michael A. Bates (Jennifer) of Berlin; his granddaughter Sofia Bingham; his parents-in-law, Elizabeth and Frank Farrell of Mauchline, Scotland; and his sisters-in-law, Debbie Brooks (Mike) of St. Louis and Pam Rice (Tad) of Rochester. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
