He was predeceased by: his parents, Weldon McKnight and Lucy McKnight (O'Dell); and his siblings, Janet McKnight and Michael McKnight. He is survived by: his wife Elinor Hahn; his sons, Kirk McKnight (Anita), Milan and Tim McKnight (Brenda); his grandchildren, Michael McKnight (Mandy), Kellie McKnight, Sean McKnight (Kathy), Megan Doane (Alex) and Nathan McKnight (Molly); his great grandchildren, Jordan, Mason, Maddox, Ailbhe, Charli, Calvin, Lilly and Decker; and his siblings, Elizabeth Woodward, Pat McKnight and Theresa Collins.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Milan or to the family to plant trees in Joe's memory.
