He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hempen and Irma Hempen (Wollbrink); and his sister Marjorie Montgomery. He is survived by: his wife Darlene Kammerer of Hamilton; his sons, Tim Hempen (Cindy) of Hamilton and Mark Hempen (Laurie) of New London, Iowa; his grandchildren, Heather Huntley (Rob), Hillary Hempen, Haleigh Bell (Nick), Christian Hempen (Amy Petry) and Kendall Hempen; and his great grandchildren, Robbie, Hayden Huntley, Harbor Hempen and Bahnon Bell.
Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem United Church of Christ or the Hamilton Food Pantry.
