He was predeceased by: his wife Laura Klemp-Hoekstra; his parents, Herman Kooyenga-Hoekstra and Effie Kooyenga-Hoekstra; and his brothers, Drewes "Duke", Tom and Menno Hoekstra.

He is survived by: his children, Herman (Effie Kooyenga-Hoekstra), Marlene Smith (Larry), Robert (Carol) and Glenn Hoekstra (Jan); his grandchildren, Jennifer Smith (Christina Goodrich), Jeff Smith (Heidi), Adam Hoekstra (Diane) and Calvin Hoekstra (Kaleigh); his great grandchildren, Benjamin, Naomi, Kimber and Jade Hoekstra; and his sister Thelma Kok (John).

Memorials to the Mid America Reformed Seminary appreciated.
