He was predeceased by: his parents, William Nelson and Margaret Nelson (Thompson); his wife Martha Bosworth; and his siblings, James, Harry and Helen.

He is survived by: his children, Robert Nelson (Judith) of Corinna, Maine, Moira Atkinson (Christopher) of Decatur and Heather Burnem (Shayne) of Florence, Oregon; his grandchildren, Emma Grace, Esther, Robert, Caleb, Joshua, Maxwell, Samuel, Mitchell, Dara (Syvannah), Hannah (Tanner) and Eli; and his great grandchild Harvey.
