Edith Louise Smith, daughter of the late Joseph Karl and Louisa Hofmann (Schmitt) Smith, was born Dec. 14, 1885 in Union County, Illinois and passed away Saturday, April 30, 1977 at the Union County Nursing Home in Anna, Illinois at the age of 91 years. She is one of eleven children in her family and survived them all;

She was born Edith Louise Schmitt, a German name, but because the German's were not very popular during World War I, and World War II, the family changed their last name to Smith.
Miss Smith worked as a registered nurse in various hospitals throughout Illinois for over 50 years. After she retired as a nurse in Illinois, she moved to Ypsilanti, Mich., where she worked for about 12 years as a nurse before returning to Illinois. She has been living in this area for past 10 years. Miss Smith was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge of Jonesboro and a member of the Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her niece Norma Louise Matt and several grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 3 1977 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Norris and Son Funeral Home with Pastor Albert F. Nyland officiating. Interment was the Jonesboro Cemetery.
Norris and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
