He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Bertelsen and Laura Jane Sackman Bertelsen; his stepfather Melvin "Chick" Chandler; and his cousins, Meredith Fisher and Jon Rausch.
He is survived by: his wife Karen; his children, Derek Bertelsen (Nelson Capetillo) of Chicago, Illinois and Jackie Leng (Kyle) of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; his stepchildren, Dale Biddle (Amanda) of Aledo, Illinois, Cheryl Baker of Decatur, Indiana, Michelle Carle (Adam) of Joy, Illinois and Sarah Gilmour of Aledo, Illinois; his granddaughter Lynnux; his siblings, Laura England of Lake Ozark and Andy Bertelsen (Lexia Henderson) of Flagstaff, Arizona; his stepbrothers, Kevin of Oquawka, Illinois, Mark of Oquawka, Illinois, Todd Chandler of Oquawka, Illinois and Gary Cooper Jr. of Mount Calvary, Wisconsin; his aunts, Jane Fisher (Eugene) of Galesburg, Illinois and Carol Rausch (Sam) of Oyster Bay; his parents-in-law, Gary and Leota Cooper of Aledo, Illinois; his cousin Adrienne Cirrincione of Chicago, Illinois; and his close friend Bill Starrs of Mesa, Arizona.. He is also survived by 10 step-grandchildren.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2023 at Fippinger's where memorials may be made to the Mercer County 4H Foundation, Mercer County FFA Alumni or the Mercer County Agricultural Society.
