He was predeceased by: his father Jack Mertz of West Bend, Iowa.. He is survived by: his mother Mary Helen Mertz (Greener); his children, Blake Mertz (Amanda) of Morgantown, WV, Jamie Mertz (Angela) of Indianola, IA, Kate Avenarius (Paul) of Dubuque, IA, Beth Greiner (TJ) of Des Moines, IA and Meg Lastovica (Jason) of Ankeny, IA.; his parents-in-law, Betty Walker and Gene Walker; his brother-in-law Jim Walker; his wife Linda; his siblings, Linda Martin (Dale), Lisa Davenport (Joe), Kara Berg (John), Jeff Mertz and Pat Mertz (Pam); and his siblings-in-law, Becky Wolf (David), Jack Walker and Jerry Walker (Julie). He is also survived by 5 children and their partners, 13 grandchildren.
John contracted Covid-19 in early January 2021.
