He was predeceased by: his parents, Marion Joseph and Helen Doris Kates (Putnam); and his brother Kenneth. He is survived by: his wife Jo Ann Kates of Oakland, IA; his children, Linda Smith of Omaha, NE, Lisa Rollins (Monty) of Oakland, IA, Larry Kates of Riverside, CA and Lonnie Kates (Julie) of Carson, IA; and his grandchildren, Carey Danker (Stacy), Christi Gibler, Lindsey Henderson (Rhett), Leigh Bell (Herb), Lauren Schueman (Cody), Mitchell Rollins (Kelsie), Kyra Kates (Miles), Ean Kates, Ryleigh Kates, Karlee Kates, Seth Kates (Melanie), Kade Kates (Melody) and Gabrielle McCowen (Garret). He is also survived by 20 great grandchildren; and his nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
